recording vs. playing

I want to say a little more about this idea of concentrating on recording vs. playing.  Two weeks ago we saw The Dirty Projectors play in Lawrence, Kansas, which was an amazing show by an amazing band.  We’ve been studying the work of Dave Longstreth, the lead singer and composer and arranger (and producer and everything!) for the DP, and trying to figure out how he works and makes such awesome music.  We’ve come to the realization that he composes and records almost everything before he ever worries about “doh, how the hell am I going to actually play these crazy arrangements live!?”  He just composes and worries about the actual live performance later.  When he finally has the arrangements he wants, he looks for the people and lineup to play them after he already has the album finished.  St. Vincent does the same thing, and her live show is also fantastic.

And so that’s what we plan to do with Humanimals.  In Lima we’ve been really limited by how we are going to play things live, which has constrained our sound and our compositional possibilities. Now we are re-thinking, composing, recording and re-recording what sounds the coolest, and we’ll worry about how to play it live later!

We also want to find a mixer/sound producer, who understands our vision and who can make our first record sound as awesome as it can and be as commercially viable as possible.  Unfortunately most music consumers can’t understand new music and new bands unless they're presented in the right way, IE, recorded and mixed and mastered extremely well, fitting within their sonoric expectations of what pop music sounds like.  We hope to record most of it ourselves, working with Sebastian as much as possible, and then in the final mixing look to work with someone we really respect and admire and who has worked with artists we really like.  At this point we don’t know who that will be or how we will get in touch with them…but, that’s the goal!

So…Humanimals first full-length album, think February or March of 2013! But the recording and video for Like You Like will be much sooner! Very soooon!!!   Stay tuned Humanifans!  -Adele
